Digital ID available

California supports digital ID in both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. You must have a California REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card.

  1. 1Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 17 or later.
  2. 2Open the Wallet app and tap the + button in the top right.
  3. 3Tap 'Driver's License or State ID' and select California.
  4. 4Follow the prompts to scan the front and back of your physical ID.
  5. 5Complete the face scan to verify your identity.
  6. 6Your ID will be submitted to the California DMV for approval — this typically takes a few minutes.

  2. 2Open the Google Wallet app and tap the + button.
  3. 3Tap 'ID documents' and select 'Driver's license or state ID'.
  4. 4Select California from the list.

  6. 6Complete the selfie verification step.
  7. 7Your submission goes to the California DMV — approval usually arrives within a few minutes.
